VFR Cloud Clearance

Class A

Airspace – NONE

Equipment – IFR

Class B

Clouds – 3 statute miles and clear of clouds

Equipment – 2 way radio, Mode C transponder w/altitude, must have clearance prior to entry.

Class C – 3 Statute Miles, 500′ below, 1000′ above and 2000′ horizontal

  • 5 NM radius core, to 4,000′ (generally)
  • 10 NM radius core 1,200-4000′ (generally)
  • 2 way radio
  • radar beacon w/ altitude mode c.
  • 2 way radio communication needs to be established with aircraft identification.

Class D

Clouds -3 Statute Miles, 500′ below, 1000′ above and 2000′ horizontal

  • Surface to 2,500′ above airport (generally)
  • full time or part time tower
  • 2 way radio

Class E – Less than 10,000 MSL’ – 3 statute miles, 500′ below, 1000′ above and 2000′ horizontal.

Class E – above 10,000′ MSL – 5 statute miles, 1000 above, 1000′ below , 1 mile horizontal

Class G 

1200′ or less AGL 

Day – 1 Statute Mile and Clear of clouds

Night – 3 statute miles, 500,1000,2000

1200′-10,000′ MSL

500′ below, 1000′ above, 2000′ horizontal

Day – 1 Stature Mile visibility

Night – 3 statute miles visibility

10,000’+ 

5 statute miles, 1000′ below, 1000′ above and 1 statute mile horizontal
